12018 - EPL

Case IH 12018 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller (Module XA): Electrical Motor Current Too High EPL

Issue description

The electrical current drawn by the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator motor has exceeded the absolute maximum allowed threshold. This condition is typically caused by an internal short circuit in the actuator motor, a short in the wiring harness, or a severe mechanical bind (such as a misadjusted cable) causing the motor to stall and spike in current draw.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225
  • Puma 240 CVX
  • Magnum 180
  • Magnum 225
  • Steiger
  • Farmall

Check the cause

  1. Check Battery Voltage: Low system voltage or a failing battery can cause the EPL to malfunction and log faults. Ensure the battery is fully charged and passes a load test, and clean the battery cables.

  2. Inspect the EPL Cable: Check the mechanical cable running from the actuator to the parking brake mechanism. If the cable is misadjusted, stretched, or seized, it will cause the motor to bind and draw excessive current.

  3. Check the EPL Fuse: Inspect the 30A EPL fuse (often designated as X-701) in the fuse panel to ensure it hasn't blown due to the short.

  4. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the EPL actuator for rubbed-through insulation causing a short to ground or power.

  5. Run H9 Voltmeter Diagnostics: Enter the 'H9' menu on the instrument cluster to monitor the EPL controller circuits in real-time for sudden voltage drops or spikes.

Repair steps

  1. Adjust or Free the Cable

If the mechanical cable is binding, adjust it to the proper tension or replace it if it is seized.

  2. Replace the Actuator

If the wiring is intact and the cable moves freely but the code persists, the internal motor is shorted. Remove the faulty EPL actuator and install a replacement.

  3. Calibrate the EPL System

After replacing the actuator or adjusting the cable, enter the diagnostic mode using the instrument cluster switches and navigate to the XA module, menu 'H1' (Calibration procedures). Follow the on-screen prompts using the 'h' and 'm' buttons to calibrate the 'applied' and 'released' positions of the park lock.

  4. Clear Fault Codes

Navigate to the 'HC' menu in the XA module to clear all stored fault codes.

  5. Alternative Workaround

If immediate repair is not possible, a technician can use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to disable the EPL system in the tractor's configuration. The operator will then need to rely entirely on the manual hand brake.
