Case IH 12018 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) controller: Electrical Motor Current Too High EPL

Issue description

The current being drawn by the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator motor has exceeded the maximum allowable limit. This is typically caused by a direct short circuit in the motor itself, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a mechanically jammed parking brake mechanism that causes the actuator motor to stall and draw excessive amperage.

Check the cause

  1. Mechanical Binding Check: Inspect the parking brake's mechanical linkage and cables. If the mechanism is seized, rusted, or jammed with debris, the actuator motor will stall when trying to engage/disengage, causing the high current draw.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running between the EPL controller and the EPL actuator motor. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted areas that could cause a short circuit to ground.

  3. Connector Check: Disconnect the EPL actuator and inspect the connector pins for water ingress, corrosion, or bridging.

  4. Motor Resistance Test: Measure the internal resistance of the EPL actuator motor with a multimeter to check for an internal dead short.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface. Because you will be working on the parking brake system, chock the wheels securely to prevent the tractor from rolling. Disconnect the battery.

  2. Access the Actuator

    Locate the Electronic Park Lock actuator, which is typically mounted near the transmission or rear axle housing.

  3. Resolve the Root Cause

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring short, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. If the mechanical linkage is seized, clean, free up, and lubricate the components.

  4. Replace the Actuator

    If internally shorted, unbolt the actuator from its mounting bracket, disconnect the mechanical linkage, and unplug the electrical connector. Install the new actuator and reconnect the linkage and wiring.

  5. Reconnect Battery

    Reconnect the battery terminals.

  6. Perform EPL Calibration

    After repairing the wiring or replacing the actuator, the EPL system must be calibrated so the controller learns the new end-stops. Insert the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843) into the diagnostic connector to access the 'H' menu mode. Navigate to the H1 menu for the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller. Ensure the shuttle lever is in the park position. Use the service brakes to prevent the tractor from moving. Use the 'h' and 'm' buttons on the control panel to calibrate the applied and released positions. Depress and hold the 'm' button to calibrate the released position. The display will show 'M'. Release the 'm' button. The lower central display will show 'donE' when the calibration values have successfully reset to their default values.

  7. Clear Codes

    Clear the stored 12018 fault code and test the electronic park lock operation.
