12019 - EPL

Case IH 12019 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: Power stage – current over dynamic set point

Issue description

The controller has detected that the electric motor responsible for engaging or disengaging the parking brake mechanism is drawing more electrical current than the software's dynamic threshold allows. This typically indicates that the motor is working too hard due to a mechanical bind in the park lock linkage, a failing internal electric motor, or a short circuit in the wiring harness.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (140, 165, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Connectors and Relays: Check the wiring and pins for corrosion, shorts, or damage at X012 (Reverser/Shuttle switch), X036 (Electronic parking brake control relay), X121 (Parking brake switch), and X745 (Electronic Park Brake interface connector).

  2. Mechanical Linkage Check: Verify that the mechanical adjustment of the EPL transmission lever is correct and that the internal braking pads/linkage are not worn or binding.

  3. Battery Voltage Check: Ensure the tractor's system voltage is stable. The EPL is highly sensitive to voltage drops (often triggering companion codes like 12052 for low voltage).

  4. Attempt Calibration: Enter the tractor's H diagnostic menu (using the diagnostic test switch in the right-hand rear cab pillar) and navigate to the H1 menu to attempt an EPL calibration before replacing parts.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a flat, open surface. Ensure the engine is off, the handbrake is released, and the shuttle lever is in the park position. Block the wheels to prevent rolling.

  2. Access the Actuator

Locate the EPL actuator motor assembly on the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Unplug the X745 interface connector from the EPL actuator.

  4. Remove the Actuator

Unbolt the EPL actuator from the transmission housing.

  5. Inspect the Transmission Linkage

Manually actuate the park lock lever on the transmission to ensure it moves freely without excessive force. If it binds, the transmission park lock mechanism requires internal repair.

  6. Replace the Motor

If the linkage moves freely, the actuator motor itself is internally shorted or failing. Install the new EPL actuator and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.

  7. Reconnect Wiring

Plug the X745 connector back into the new actuator.

  8. Calibrate the New EPL

Turn the key switch on. Enter the H-menu diagnostics and select H1 - Calibration procedures. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the EPL applied position, released position, and the accelerometer. During this procedure, you should hear the electric motor moving.

  9. Clear Codes

Navigate to the HB menu to clear stored fault codes and verify that 12019 does not return.
