Case IH 12020 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Unexpected electrical motor current
Issue description
This indicates that the system has detected an abnormal current draw (either too high or too low) in the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) motor/actuator circuit.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Farmall
Check the cause
Load test the battery and ensure the battery cables are clean and tight, as low voltage or amperage can cause unexpected current codes.
Push both brake pedals down, turn the key switch on, move the Forward/Neutral/Reverse (FNR) lever, and push the neutral button to listen if the electric motor for the park brake is physically attempting to move.
Inspect data and physical connections for corrosion or damage at the switch connector of inversion (X012), electronic parking brake relay (X036), parking brake switch connector (X121), and electronic parking brake connector (X745).
Verify the clutch pedal switch is properly engaged and not misaligned or loose, which can interrupt the starting sequence.
Use the 'H9' menu on the steering controller to monitor live voltage circuits for sudden drops or spikes.
Repair steps
Secure the Tractor
Ensure the shuttle lever is in the park position. Use the service brakes or wheel chocks to prevent the tractor from moving, as you will be working on the parking brake system.
Resolve Wiring/Voltage Issues
If the diagnostic checks revealed corroded pins at connectors X012, X036, X121, or X745, clean or replace the damaged harness sections. Replace the electronic parking brake relay (X036) if it fails testing.
Replace the EPL Actuator
If the wiring and voltage are sound but the motor is drawing incorrect current, the EPL actuator motor has failed internally and must be replaced. Disconnect the battery, unplug the actuator harness, unbolt the unit from the transmission housing, and install the new actuator.
Perform EPL Calibration
Insert the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843) into the tractor's diagnostic connector. Access the 'H1' menu. Use the 'h' button to calibrate the applied position and hold the 'm' button to calibrate the released position until the display shows 'donE'.
Clear Codes
Access the 'H8' menu (or 'HC' menu) to erase all stored error codes from the EEPROM.
