Check the cause

  1. Verify if the code is 'Active' or 'Stored' — if there are no active alarms during operation, it may be a historical glitch

  2. Inspect connector ends for damaged, bent, or dislocated pins

  3. Check Connector C059 to the hitch controller to ensure it is secure and undamaged

  4. Test the physical CAN Data Bus connections between the instrumentation controller and the hitch controller

Repair steps

  1. Clear Stored Codes

If the tractor is operating normally, clear the factory/stored memory codes and operate the tractor to see if code 12031 returns as an active fault.

  2. Inspect and Clean Wiring

If the code is active, locate the Hitch Controller and the Instrumentation Controller. Disconnect the wiring harnesses (including connector C059).

  3. Repair Bad Connections

Look for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or broken wires in the CAN bus harness. Repair any bad connections between the INST and HITCH controllers.

  4. Module Replacement

If the wiring and data bus connections are fully intact and functioning correctly, the failure mode is an internal controller failure. You will need to replace the Hitch Controller.
