Case IH 12031 – INST, INST2, PERF, or TRANS: Communications Lost with Hitch Controller

Issue description

Communication has been lost between the tractor's instrumentation/performance controller and the hitch controller via the CAN Data Bus. This is typically caused by a bad electrical connection or damaged wiring harness, a failure of the CAN bus terminators, or an internal failure of the hitch controller.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series
  • Case IH TG Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Magnum 235-340 (Series 4)

Check the cause

  1. Check the hitch controller status by ensuring the main connector (C059) is firmly plugged in and observing the LED status lamp (blinking green indicates it is receiving power and functioning).

  2. Disconnect the hitch controller and inspect the connector ends for damaged, pushed-back, corroded, or bent pins.

  3. Test the CAN bus terminators by disconnecting the front terminator at connector C205 (leaving the rear connected) and turning the key ON. Measure voltage on the harness side: Pin 1 (Red) should be 12V, Pin 2 (Yellow) 2.5-4V, Pin 3 should have ground continuity, and Pin 4 (Green) 1-2.5V.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Issues

If the voltage tests fail, trace the CAN bus wiring harness looking for chafed wires, rodent damage, or loose grounds. Repair any damaged sections of the harness.

  2. Replace Terminators

If the terminator is faulty, replace it. Case IH recommends upgrading older 4-pin active/passive terminators to a newer, more stable 3-pin 'cap style' 120-ohm resistor using an adapter harness.

  3. Replace the Hitch Controller

If the CAN bus voltages are perfectly in spec (approx. 2.5V on yellow/green data lines, 12V power, and good ground) but the hitch controller has no LED light or still will not communicate, the controller has failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. Recalibrate

After replacing the hitch controller, you must perform the Hitch Controller Calibration procedure.
