Case IH 12033 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: Fault on encoder impulses sequence

Issue description

The controller is receiving an incorrect sequence of signals, or an interrupted signal, from the encoder inside the electronic park lock actuator. Because of this interruption, the system cannot accurately determine the physical position of the parking brake mechanism.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma 165 CVX
  • Puma 180 CVX
  • Puma 195 CVX
  • Puma 210 CVX
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • Puma 240 CVX
  • Magnum series

Check the cause

  1. Verify battery voltage and perform a load test to rule out low voltage or poor battery cable connections causing erroneous encoder codes

  2. Check the clutch pedal switch to ensure the screw or mechanism triggering the switch is properly adjusted and engaging

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors to the electronic parking brake actuator (specifically switch connectors X036, X121, and X745) for open circuits, shorts to ground, or corrosion

  4. Attempt a manual cycle test to listen for motor operation: press both brake pedals down, turn the key switch on, move the FNR lever, and press the neutral button

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the tractor's battery to ensure safety before working on the EPL electrical system.

  2. Locate actuator

Locate the Electronic Park Lock actuator assembly on the transmission housing.

  3. Inspect and repair wiring

Disconnect the wiring harness from the EPL actuator and inspect the pins for damage. If the wiring is damaged, repair the harness.

  4. Remove faulty actuator

If the wiring is intact but the encoder has failed internally, remove the mounting bolts securing the EPL actuator to the transmission.

  5. Install new actuator

Install the new EPL actuator and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect components

Reconnect the wiring harness and reconnect the battery.

  7. Perform EPL Calibration

The system must be recalibrated after replacing the actuator. This can be done via the ADIC (Advanced Display Instrument Cluster) by entering the H1 menu under the EPL (XA) sub-menu to calibrate the applied and released positions, or by using the dealer Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear stored fault codes (using the H8 or HC menu) and recalibrate the park lock.
