Case IH 12034 – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Fault On Encoder Signals
Issue description
The control module is not receiving the expected A or B position signals from the encoder, which tracks the physical position of the park lock mechanism.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Optum Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EPL controller and the EPL actuator for open circuits, shorts to ground, or corrosion.
Navigate to the EPL controller (Module XA) and enter the H9 menu to view live voltage readings, checking if encoder signals are reaching the controller without sudden drop-offs.
Use the H8 menu to clear stored calibration information and old fault codes from the EEPROM.
Enter the H1 menu to attempt the EPL calibration procedure to rule out a temporary glitch.
Repair steps
Secure the machine
Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic pressure, and ensure the machine is safely secured (chock the wheels since the park lock is malfunctioning).
Repair wiring
Repair any damaged wiring or connectors found during the diagnostic phase.
Test system
Operate the system and check if the error code returns.
Recalibrate EPL actuator
If the wiring is intact, attempt to recalibrate the EPL actuator using the H1 menu.
Diagnose internal encoder
If the error code 12034 is still indicated, or if the H1 calibration procedure fails/aborts, the internal encoder has failed.
Remove faulty actuator
Remove the faulty EPL actuator assembly.
Install replacement actuator
Install the replacement Electronic Park Lock actuator.
Perform calibration
Perform the H1 calibration procedure on the newly installed actuator to marry it to the controller.
