12034 - EPL

Case IH 12034 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller / Module XA: EPL: Fault on encoder signals (A or B signal not available)

Issue description

The encoder function within the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) system is unavailable. The controller is not receiving valid position data (Signal A or Signal B) from the encoder inside the park lock actuator, meaning the system cannot verify the physical position of the parking brake mechanism.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the battery and ensure it is fully charged and load-tested, as low voltage during startup can trigger false EPL codes.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EPL controller and the park lock actuator for open circuits, shorts to ground, or damaged pins on the A and B encoder signal lines.

  3. Verify that the handbrake switch and the electronic parking brake relay are functioning correctly and that their connectors are fully seated.

  4. Attempt to recalibrate the EPL system by entering the diagnostic 'H' menu on the instrument cluster, navigating to the XA module, and running the H1 calibration procedure.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Actuator

Locate the Electronic Park Lock actuator on the transmission housing (typically on the lower right-hand side, just ahead of the axle housing).

  2. Remove the Faulty Actuator

Disconnect the electrical harness from the actuator. Unbolt and remove the actuator assembly from the transmission housing. (Note: If the tractor is locked in park and needs to be moved into a shop, you can manually release the brake by applying hydraulic pressure—usually 150-200 psi—via a port-a-power to the quick-connect fitting on the valve body).

  3. Install the New Actuator

Mount the replacement EPL actuator to the transmission and torque the bolts to OEM spec. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  4. Calibrate the New Actuator

Turn the key on and enter the diagnostic mode using the instrument cluster switches. Navigate to the XA module and select the H1 menu to perform the EPL calibration procedure.

  5. Clear Fault Codes

Once calibration is successful, navigate to the HC menu (Clear all stored fault codes) or H8 menu (Clear stored calibration information/EEPROM) to erase the 12034 code from the controller's memory.

  6. Test Operation

Cycle the park lock via the shuttle lever/neutral button to ensure the electric motor engages and disengages smoothly without throwing new codes.
