12052

Case IH 12052 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: EPL power supply lower than 10Volts

Issue description

The system has detected that the voltage being supplied to the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) system has dropped below the minimum operating threshold. This often happens when the tractor's batteries go dead, are disconnected, or during a heavy voltage drop when starting.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (140, 165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 215, 225, 230, 240, including CVT)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (MX Magnum, 180, 190, 200, 225)

Check the cause

  1. Test battery voltage and health with a multimeter and load tester to rule out a weak battery or severe voltage drop during cranking

  2. Inspect battery cables and terminals for corrosion or loose connections causing voltage drops to the cab controllers

  3. Check the power supply wiring harness and relays leading to the EPL controller behind the cab for shorts to ground or open circuits

  4. Verify if the tractor's batteries recently went dead or were disconnected, which indicates the EPL simply lost calibration and needs reinitialization

Repair steps

  1. Sit in the operator's seat with the shuttle lever in the "Park" position.

  2. With the ignition key in the OFF position, step down and hold both brake pedals.

  3. Turn the ignition key to the ON/RUN position.

    Do not start the engine.

  4. Move the shuttle lever out of Park and into the middle/neutral position.

  5. Press the neutral button on the shuttle lever.

You should hear the EPL actuator unit behind the cab whine for a couple of seconds as it moves the brake cable.

  6. Once the actuator noise stops, push the shuttle lever back into the "Park" position.

The EPL should whine again for a couple of seconds and then stop.

  7. Verify the fault code clears and the tractor is able to move.

If the code persists or is accompanied by code 12188, the EPL cable linkage (located near the LH axle on the side of the transmission) may require mechanical adjustment to compensate for pad wear.
