12053

Case IH 12053 – INST: Communications Lost with Vehicle Data Bus 2

Issue description

A Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure. The module logging the code has lost its data link with the secondary vehicle data bus network (Data Bus 2), meaning it can no longer send or receive critical operational data from other modules on that specific circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Maxxum and Optum series

Check the cause

  1. Verify system voltage is within the specified operating range (12V-14V) and not dropping too low or spiking above 16V.

  2. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins on Data Bus 2 (60 ohms is healthy, 120 ohms indicates a missing/failed resistor or break, Open indicates a severed wire or disconnected connector).

  3. Visually inspect the CAN connectors on the INST controller and along Data Bus 2 for moisture, dirt buildup, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

  2. Inspect and Clean Connectors

Locate the INST controller and the main harness for Vehicle Data Bus 2. Disconnect the harness and inspect the pins. Clean out any moisture or debris using contact cleaner and ensure the connections are completely dry.

  3. Trace the Harness

If the resistance test (mentioned above) yielded 120 ohms or an open circuit, physically trace the Data Bus 2 wiring harness. Look for pinch points, chafing against the chassis, or heat damage.

  4. Repair or Replace Wiring/Resistors

If a wire is broken, repair it using a CAN bus-approved twisted-pair repair method, or replace the affected harness section. If a terminating resistor is faulty, plug in a replacement 120-ohm CAN terminator.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect all modules and the battery. Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the stored 12053 code from the INST controller.

  6. Recalibrate/Test

Start the tractor and perform a test drive or calibration cycle. If the code immediately returns and the wiring/voltage is 100% verified, the INST controller itself (or another module dragging down Data Bus 2) may require reprogramming or replacement.
