Case IH 12054 – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Battery – out of range / spike diagnosis
Issue description
The power supply voltage being received by the controller is experiencing erratic voltage spikes or is falling outside the specified operating range (typically dropping below 9V or exceeding 16V).
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Farmall Series
- Case IH Steiger Series
Check the cause
Load test the batteries to ensure they are holding a proper charge and verify the resting voltage.
Test the alternator output with the engine running. Look for voltage spikes or overcharging conditions (a failing voltage regulator is a common cause of "spike diagnosis" codes).
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller. Look for loose connections, corrosion, or chafed wires that could cause intermittent voltage drops or spikes.
Check the ground connections for the EPL controller and the main chassis grounds. Clean and tighten them.
Verify the condition of the power supply relays and fuses supplying the EPL module.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Always disconnect the negative battery cable before performing electrical repairs or charging the battery to prevent further module damage.
Clean Connections
Clean and tighten all battery terminals and chassis ground connections.
Address Alternator Spikes
If the alternator is producing voltage spikes due to a failed internal voltage regulator, replace the alternator.
Repair Wiring
Repair or replace any damaged wiring in the EPL power supply circuit.
Replace EPL Controller
If the wiring, battery, and alternator are all functioning perfectly but the EPL controller continues to log the 12054 fault, the EPL controller itself has likely suffered an internal hardware fault and requires replacement.
Recalibrate
After repair, clear the fault codes. If the EPL controller was replaced, you must perform the Electronic Park Lock calibration procedure (accessed via the H1 menu on the instrument cluster for the XA module).
