Case IH 12061 – INST2: Communications Lost with Steering Controller
Issue description
Loss of CAN data bus communication between the Instrument Cluster (ICU2) and the Steering Controller.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- STX Steiger
- Case IH MX Magnum
- Case IH TG Series
- Case IH Steiger
- Case IH Puma
Check the cause
Check Battery Voltage: Verify the system voltage. Low battery voltage can cause communication drops and trigger related codes (e.g., 8011 Battery Voltage is too Low).
Check for Global Bus Failure: Look for code INST2 12043 (Communications Lost with Data Bus and ALL other controllers). If present, this indicates a total data bus failure rather than an isolated module issue.
Verify Configuration: Check for configuration mismatch codes (e.g., TRANS 3030 Invalid Tractor Model configured in the Instrumentation Controller), which can prevent modules from communicating properly.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery.
Locate affected modules
Locate the affected modules: The Instrument Cluster (ICU2) and the Steering Controller (for 12061), or the Armrest/AUX and Instrumentation Controller (for 12041).
Inspect connectors
Disconnect the wiring harness connectors at both modules and inspect for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins.
Verify CAN data bus wiring
Verify the physical integrity of the CAN data bus wiring between the modules (check for open circuits or shorts to ground).
Replace or reprogram controller
If the wiring harness and connections are intact, the fault likely lies within one of the controllers, requiring replacement or dealer reprogramming.
