Case IH 12066 – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Fault on trailer brake relay line (open or short circuit to power supply)

The controller has detected an anomaly on the trailer brake relay circuit—specifically, an open wire/load or an output that is shorted to a 12V power source (Vbatt).

   Verify that the trailer brake relay is securely seated in the fuse/relay panel and check any associated fuses for the trailer brake circuit.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running between the EPL controller and the trailer brake relay for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could cause a short to 12V.

   Inspect the connectors at both the EPL controller and the relay block for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins.

   Swap the trailer brake relay with a known good relay of the same type, or bench-test it with a multimeter to rule out an internal open circuit in the relay coil.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.

   Locate Components

   Access the main electrical distribution board/relay panel to locate the Trailer Brake Relay. Locate the EPL controller.

   Test the Circuit for a Short to Power

   Disconnect the harness from the EPL controller and remove the trailer brake relay. Using a multimeter, measure the voltage on the signal wire at the relay socket. If 12V is present while the controller is unplugged, the wire is shorted to a power source in the harness.

   Test the Circuit for an Open

   Measure the continuity (ohms) of the signal wire from the EPL controller connector to the relay socket. A reading of "OL" (Open Loop) or high resistance indicates a broken wire.

   Repair Wiring

   Splice and heat-shrink any broken wires, or isolate and repair the wire that is shorting to 12V. If the harness is severely damaged, a replacement harness section may be required.

   Replace Relay/Controller

   If the wiring tests perfectly, the fault lies in either a failed trailer brake relay (open coil) or an internal failure within the EPL controller itself. Replace the faulty component.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use the tractor's diagnostic menu (or the Electronic Service Tool - EST) to clear the stored 12066 fault code. Engage the system to verify the code does not return.
