Case IH 12071 – Instrumentation Controller (INST / INST2): Communications Lost with Transmission Controller

Issue description

This code indicates that the CAN (Controller Area Network) Data Bus communication has been interrupted or lost between the tractor's instrumentation controller and the transmission controller. The underlying condition is typically a loss of power to the transmission controller, a severed/corroded CAN bus wire, a failed CAN terminator resistor, or an internal failure of one of the controllers.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH MX Magnum Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the Transmission Controller Status LED: Flashing indicates normal function, Solid ON indicates internal failure, OFF indicates no power (check power supply and ground).

  2. Check the Instrumentation Controller: If no display/backlight, check power supply, ground, fuses, and ensure connector C061 is fully seated. If display is erratic and other controllers report lost communication, the instrument controller has likely failed.

  3. Check Data Bus Power Supply: Turn key switch ON and verify 12 volts at Fuse #41. If not, trace the switched power supply.

  4. Check CAN Bus Terminators: Turn key switch OFF and measure resistance between yellow and green CAN bus wires. It should read 60 ohms; 120 ohms or an open circuit indicates one or both passive CAN terminators have failed.

Repair steps

  1. Clean Power Delivery

Disconnect the battery. Clean the battery terminals and all chassis ground connections, as low system voltage is a primary cause of module offline errors.

  2. Inspect Connectors

Disconnect and inspect connector C027 at the transmission controller and connector C061 at the instrumentation controller. Look for pushed-out pins, bent pins, or green corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  3. Replace Fuses

If Fuse #41 (or any 5A controller fuse) is blown, replace it and re-test the system.

  4. Replace Terminators

If the resistance test in the diagnostic phase yielded 120 ohms, locate the failed CAN terminator resistor on the bus line and replace it.

  5. Replace the Controller

If the transmission controller LED was solid ON, or if all wiring, fuses, and terminators test perfectly but communication cannot be restored, replace the transmission controller. (Note: A replacement controller may require dealer programming/calibration to sync with the tractor's ICU).
