Case IH 12091 – INST or TRANS: Communications Lost with Engine Controller

Issue description

This fault code indicates a communication failure over the tractor's CAN data bus. The module logging the code has stopped receiving expected data messages from the Engine Controller (ECU).

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Magnum Series (MX180-MX285)
  • TG Series
  • Puma Series
  • STX Steiger Series
  • FLX Floaters
  • SPX Sprayers
  • CPX610
  • CPX620

Check the cause

  1. Verify the engine controller is powering up by checking the main power and ground supplies to the ECU.

  2. Inspect the main wiring harness connector to the engine controller to ensure it is fully plugged in, locked, and free of corrosion or pushed-out pins.

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring between the Engine Controller and the Instrumentation/Transmission controller, testing CAN High and CAN Low lines for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.

  4. Ensure both the engine controller and the logging controller (INST or TRANS) are functioning properly and communicating with a diagnostic scan tool.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before unplugging control modules to prevent voltage spikes.

  2. Clean and Re-seat Connectors

Disconnect the Engine Controller and the INST/TRANS controller. Spray the pins with electrical contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and firmly reconnect them. Clear the code and re-test.

  3. Repair Wiring

If the CAN bus wiring failed the continuity or short tests, locate the chafe mark or break in the harness (commonly found near pivot points, engine vibration points, or cab pass-throughs) and repair the wiring using OEM-approved splicing methods.

  4. Replace Faulty Controller

If the wiring harness is perfectly intact and the ECU has verified power/ground but still will not communicate, the failure mode is an internal controller failure. Replace the Engine Controller (or the INST/TRANS module if it is determined to be the unresponsive node).

  5. Reprogramming

If a controller is replaced, the new module will likely need to be flashed/programmed with the correct machine software using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).
