Case IH 12143 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) module: Fault on CAN message (vehicle direction signal)
Issue description
The Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller is failing to receive the required vehicle direction data (forward/reverse/neutral status) from the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) over the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN) bus.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Puma Series (140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
- Case IH Magnum Series (180, 190, 210, 240)
- Case IH Maxxum Series (100-150 CVX)
Check the cause
Verify the battery is fully charged and holding voltage under load, as low voltage can cause erroneous communication faults
Check the integrity of the data connection at key switch connectors: X012 (reverser/shuttle lever), X036 (electronic parking brake relay), X121 (parking brake switch), and X745 (electronic parking brake)
Enter the tractor's H-menu via the ADIC and use the H5 menu in the EPL (XA) sub-menu to perform a switch operation test for the direction lever inputs
Verify that the mechanical EPL cable is properly adjusted to ensure physical binding is not coinciding with electronic lock faults
Repair steps
Inspect Wiring
Disconnect the battery. Inspect the wiring harness between the VCU and the EPL module. Pay special attention to the 24-way FCI SICMA connector at the EPL module for backed-out pins, moisture, or corrosion.
Test CAN Bus Continuity
Use a multimeter to test the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the shuttle lever (X012), the VCU, and the EPL module. Repair any open or shorted wires.
Check Fuses/Relays
Inspect the 30A EPL fuse and the electronic parking brake relay (X036). Replace if blown or faulty.
Recalibrate the EPL
If wiring is intact, enter the H1 menu to perform a stroke and accelerometer calibration for the EPL module.
Clear Fault Codes
Once repairs or calibrations are made, navigate to the H8 or HC menu in the steering/EPL controller settings. Press and hold the 'm' (or dimming) button to clear all stored fault codes and reset the EEPROM values.
Module Replacement
If the CAN bus wiring is perfectly intact, the switches test good, and the module refuses to communicate or calibrate, the EPL module itself requires replacement or remanufacturing.
