12144 - EPL

Case IH 12144 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) controller: Fault on CAN message (vehicle speed)

Issue description

This fault code indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller is not receiving the required vehicle speed data message from the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) over the CAN bus network.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (160, 165, 175, 180, 195, 210, 215, 225, 240 CVX)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (180, 190, 210, 225 CVT)

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (such as 12145 for VCU_CMD error, 12147 for Engine RPM error, or 12148 for VCU_KEY error) to determine if there is a broader CAN bus wiring failure rather than an isolated speed signal issue.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the EPL module and the VCU for open circuits, chafing, or shorts to ground/power.

  3. Inspect the integrity of specific relays and connectors: switch connector data (X012), electronic parking brake relay (X036), parking brake switch connector (X121), and electronic parking brake connector (X745).

  4. Verify the vehicle speed sensor (transmission output speed sensor or radar) is functioning properly and sending a signal to the VCU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Battery

Always disconnect the battery before servicing the tractor's electrical system or CAN bus network.

  2. Repair Wiring

If diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring or corroded pins at the EPL module, VCU, or intermediate connectors (X012, X036, X121, X745), clean the pins with contact cleaner and repair or replace the damaged harness sections.

  3. Replace Speed Sensor

If the vehicle speed sensor is found to be dead (causing the VCU to have no speed data to broadcast), replace the sensor.

  4. Repair/Replace EPL Module

If the wiring is perfectly intact, the VCU is broadcasting correctly, and the EPL module is simply failing to process the CAN messages, the EPL module itself has failed. It must be replaced or sent out for remanufacturing.

  5. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Access the H-menu via the ADIC (Advanced Display Instrument Cluster). Use Menu HB to clear stored fault codes and Menu H8 to clear stored calibration information (EEPROM) if the EPL module was replaced.

  6. Test Drive

Perform a test drive to verify the vehicle speed registers on the dash and the electronic park lock engages/disengages correctly without throwing the 12144 code.
