Case IH 12145 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller (Module XA): Fault on CAN message (command signal)

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) system is not receiving the expected command signal (VCU_CMD) from the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) / Transmission Controller.

   Check for accompanying CAN codes (such as 12132 CAN - bus off or 12133 CAN - mute) to determine if the issue is isolated to the VCU_CMD message or if the entire CAN network is down

   Inspect the CAN bus wiring between the Transmission Controller (VCU) and the EPL controller (Module XA) for open circuits, shorts to ground, or chafing

   Check the pins and connectors at the EPL module and the VCU for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or backed-out pins

   Verify the integrity of the switch connectors associated with the parking brake system, specifically the shuttle lever, the electronic parking brake relay, and the parking brake switch connectors

   Ensure the EPL controller is receiving proper operating voltage and has a solid ground connection

   Access Diagnostics

   Insert the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843) into the tractor's diagnostic connector (usually located on the right-hand rear pillar behind the operator's seat) to access the 'H' menu on the instrument cluster.

   Repair Wiring/Connectors

   Disconnect the battery. Repair or replace any damaged CAN bus wiring, corroded pins, or faulty relays found during the diagnostic phase.

   Replace Components (If Necessary)

   If the wiring and switches are intact but the EPL controller still cannot communicate with the VCU, the EPL controller or the EPL actuator assembly has failed internally and must be replaced.

   Clear Fault Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Using the instrument cluster keypad, navigate to the XA (EPL) module, select menu HC, and clear all stored fault codes.

   Calibrate the EPL System

   Navigate to menu H1 in the XA module to perform the EPL calibration procedure. Ensure the tractor is parked on a flat, open surface, the handbrake is released, and the shuttle lever is in the park position. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the applied/released positions and the accelerometer.
