12146 - EPL

Case IH 12146 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: Fault on CAN message (auto-apply at key off flag)

Issue description

This code indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the system is missing the CAN message from the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) that commands the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) to automatically apply the parking brake when the ignition key is turned off. Because this signal is missing or corrupted, the tractor cannot verify or execute the automatic parking brake engagement.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma 140
  • Case IH Puma 150
  • Case IH Puma 165
  • Case IH Puma 175
  • Case IH Puma 180
  • Case IH Puma 195
  • Case IH Puma 210
  • Case IH Puma 225
  • Case IH Magnum 180
  • Case IH Magnum 225
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Vestrum Series
  • Case IH Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify the battery is fully charged and holding proper voltage under load.

  2. Check the CAN bus wiring harness between the VCU and the EPL controller for rubbed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  3. Inspect the ignition key switch connector, the electronic parking brake relay (X036), and the parking brake switch connectors (X121, X745) for damage or poor contact.

  4. Access the tractor's Advanced Display Instrument Cluster (ADIC) or use the Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the EPL (XA) sub-menu. Use the HB menu to view all stored codes, and the HC menu to clear all stored fault codes. See if the code returns immediately upon cycling the key.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery before servicing any electronic controllers or wiring harnesses.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed broken wires or corroded pins at the VCU, ignition switch, or EPL controller connectors, repair or replace the damaged wire segments/terminals.

  3. Replace Faulty Relays/Switches

If the parking brake relay (X036) or the ignition switch is failing to send the proper key-off state to the VCU, replace the faulty component.

  4. Replace the EPL Controller (if necessary)

If the wiring, relays, and CAN bus integrity are all confirmed good but the EPL controller still fails to process the VCU_KEY_OFF_AA_INH message, the EPL controller itself has likely failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Recalibrate the System

After replacing parts or repairing wiring, reconnect the battery. Enter the ADIC menu, select the EPL (XA) sub-menu, and use the H1 menu to perform the EPL calibration procedures (accelerometer and stroke calibration).

  6. Test Operation

Turn the tractor on, engage the transmission, and then turn the key off to verify the Electronic Park Lock auto-applies correctly without throwing code 12146.
