12147 - EPL

Case IH 12147 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller (Module XA): Fault on CAN message (engine RPM signal)

Issue description

The controller responsible for the electronic park lock is not receiving the engine speed (RPM) data message over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus from the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (125, 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX / FPS / SPS)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (180, 210, 230, 255, 285)
  • Case IH Optum Series (300 CVX)

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is broadcasting the engine RPM and check for active engine speed sensor faults in the Engine ECU.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus communication lines between the Engine ECU and the EPL controller for open circuits, short circuits to ground, or short circuits to voltage.

  3. Check the integrity and data at connectors X012 (Reverser/Shuttle switch), X036 (Electronic parking brake relay), X121 (Parking brake switch), and X745 (Electronic parking brake).

  4. Use the tractor's onboard ADIC display to enter the H-Menu, navigate to the EPL (XA) sub-menu, and use the H9 menu (Voltmeter diagnostic) to verify voltage and signal integrity at the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a flat, open surface. Ensure the handbrake is released and the shuttle lever is in the park position.

  2. Wiring Repair

If diagnostic checks reveal damaged CAN bus wiring or corroded pins at connectors X012, X036, X121, or X745, clean the pins, replace the terminals, or repair the wiring harness as necessary.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If the Engine ECU is failing to broadcast the RPM due to a faulty engine speed sensor, replace the engine speed sensor.

  4. Controller Replacement

If the wiring is intact, the CAN bus is healthy, and the engine RPM is being broadcast but the EPL controller still fails to read the message, the EPL controller (Module XA) may have an internal logic failure and require replacement.

  5. Clear Codes

Once repairs are made, enter the H-Menu via the ADIC, select the EPL (XA) module, and navigate to the H8 menu to clear the stored fault codes from the EEPROM.

  6. Recalibrate

If the EPL controller or any mechanical park lock components were replaced, navigate to the H1 menu to perform the EPL calibration procedure (accelerometer and stroke calibration).
