12148

Case IH 12148 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) controller: Fault on CAN message (key signal) / CAN – VCU_KEY error / not available.

Issue description

This fault indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) module is not receiving the key switch signal (VCU_KEY) from the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), or the data being broadcast is missing, invalid, or timing out.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Puma Series 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series 180, 225
  • Case IH Maxxum Series 100-140 & PROFI 4110-6140

Check the cause

  1. Test battery health and alternator output (a weak battery is a known cause of phantom EPL communication faults)

  2. Verify that the VCU_KEY data is activated on the CAN bus

  3. Check CAN bus connections between the VCU and the EPL module for continuity, corrosion, or shorts to ground/power

  4. Inspect the switch connector, investment data connector (X012), electronic parking brake relay (X036), parking brake switch connector (X121), and electronic parking brake connector (X745)

  5. Use the diagnostic test switch (Tool #380000843) to access the H-Menu. Check menu H2 for stored calibration values, and use HC or H8 to clear error codes or EEPROM values

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring/Voltage Issues

Repair any damaged CAN wiring or corroded pins at the EPL and VCU harness connectors. Replace the battery if it fails a load test.

  2. Replace Faulty Components

If the wiring is intact and the VCU is broadcasting correctly, the EPL actuator/module itself has failed and must be replaced.

  3. EPL Calibration (H1 Menu)

If the EPL module is replaced or EEPROM is reset, you must recalibrate the Electronic Park Lock using the H1 menu. Enter the H1 calibration mode. To calibrate the released position, hold the 'm' button until the display shows 'M', then release it. To calibrate the applied position, follow the prompt to move the steering/shuttle lever and hold the 'm' button until the 'EPL applied' symbol is displayed. The lower central display will show 'donE' when the values are successfully saved.

  4. Alternative (Bypass)

If the customer prefers, dealer technicians can use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) configuration menu to completely disable the EPL system. The operator will then rely solely on the manual hand brake.
