Case IH 12149 – MTA CCM (Central Control Module) / APH Stage V MR: CAN - VCU_DYN_FCT_EN error/not available
Issue description
A Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure where the specific data message enabling or inhibiting dynamic functions from the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) is either missing, corrupted, or not available on the bus network.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Farmall 115U Efficient Power
- Farmall 40
- Farmall 45
- Farmall 50
Check the cause
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for broader network failure codes such as 12132 (CAN - Bus OFF) or 12133 (CAN - Mute). If present, the entire bus is down.
Verify system voltage and battery health. The ECU can drop CAN messages if the voltage drops below the permitted threshold (e.g., during cranking with a weak battery).
With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance across the CAN bus (CAN 1 HI and CAN 1 LO). A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms.
Test the Main Bus (250 kbps) directly at Diagnostic Connector #1: Pin C is CAN 1 HI, and Pin D is CAN 1 LO.
Visually inspect the wiring harness between the VCU and the CCM for chafing, moisture ingress at the connectors, or poor grounding.
Repair steps
Isolate the Fault
If the CAN bus resistance is 120 ohms, one of the terminating resistors is faulty or there is an open circuit in the harness. If it is 0 ohms, there is a short circuit.
Repair Wiring
If a short, open, or moisture intrusion is found, clean the connector pins with contact cleaner, apply dielectric grease, and repair the damaged CAN wires using proper CAN bus wiring repair connectors (do not use standard butt connectors, as they can disrupt the twisted-pair signal).
Check VCU Power/Ground
If the wiring is intact, verify that the VCU is receiving proper power and ground. A module that fails to power up will not broadcast its VCU_DYN_FCT_EN message.
Software Update / Module Replacement
If the harness, power, and grounds are all verified, the VCU may have suffered an internal logic failure or require a software re-flash via the Case IH EST. If a re-flash fails, the VCU must be replaced.
Clear and Test
Use the EST to clear the pending/stored 12149 code. Cycle the key, start the tractor, and operate the dynamic functions to ensure the code does not return.
