1215

Case IH 1215 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module) or UCM (Universal Control Module): Saturation Function not complete - Forward Pumps

Issue description

The electro-hydraulic (EH) calibration process for the forward hydrostatic drive pumps was interrupted, failed, or has not been successfully completed. The controller cannot complete the learning process to find the exact current required to fully stroke the pumps.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Case IH SSL (Skid Steer Loaders)
  • Case IH CTL (Compact Track Loaders)
  • Case CE SSL
  • Case CE CTL
  • Case Alpha Series SR/SV skid steers
  • Case Alpha Series TR/TV compact track loaders

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fault codes related to the joysticks (e.g., 1211 Joystick Calibration not Complete), drive pump solenoids, or hydraulic charge pressure

  2. Check that hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature before calibration (cold, thick oil can cause failure)

  3. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the forward hydrostatic pump solenoids for corrosion, loose pins, or physical damage

  4. Verify the machine is parked on a level surface, the operator is in the seat (seat switch engaged), the seat bar is down, and the parking brake is applied

Repair steps

  1. Warm up hydraulic fluid

Start the machine and operate the hydraulic functions until the hydraulic fluid reaches normal operating temperature (usually above 120°F / 50°C).

  2. Prepare machine for calibration

Park the machine on a level surface, lower the loader arms completely, apply the parking brake, and keep the engine running at the specified RPM (usually high idle, per the service manual).

  3. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the machine's diagnostic port, or access the calibration menu via the Advanced Instrument Cluster (if equipped).

  4. Navigate to calibration menu

Navigate to the Ground Drive / Hydrostatic Pump Calibration menu.

  5. Initiate calibration

Initiate the calibration sequence. The VCM will automatically stroke the forward and reverse pumps against the parking brake to learn the electrical saturation points. Keep your hands off the joysticks during this process.

  6. Wait for confirmation

Wait for the EST or display to confirm 'Calibration Successful.'

  7. Save parameters

Turn the key off to allow the VCM to save the new parameters to its memory.

  8. Test drive

Turn the machine back on, clear the inactive 1215 fault code, and test drive the machine to ensure smooth forward operation.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Forward Drive Pump Proportional Solenoid Valve

If the solenoid coil is degraded, it will not draw the correct current, causing the saturation function to fail.

  • Hydrostatic Drive Pump Assembly

If the internal swashplate is binding mechanically, the pump will not stroke properly during the test.
