1216

Case IH 1216 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Saturation Function not complete - Reverse Pumps

Issue description

Fault code 1216 indicates that the electro-hydraulic (EH) ground drive calibration process for the reverse hydrostatic pumps has not been successfully completed. Specifically, the control module is trying to learn the maximum electrical current (saturation point) required to fully stroke the reverse hydrostatic pumps, but the dynamic calibration sequence was interrupted, failed, or has not yet been performed.

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the hydraulic oil is at the correct operating temperature (must be above 50 °C / 122 °F for calibration to initiate).

  2. Ensure the machine is in a safe location to be lifted, as the tracks or wheels must be able to spin freely without any load or resistance.

  3. Check for any active UCM or hydraulic solenoid circuit fault codes (e.g., open circuits or shorts to ground) and resolve those first, as physical electrical failures will prevent calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Warm up hydraulic oil

Drive the machine or dead-head the auxiliary hydraulics (using a restrictor or flowmeter) until the hydraulic oil temperature is greater than 50 °C (122 °F).

  2. Turn engine off

Return the ground drive joysticks to neutral and turn the engine OFF.

  3. Raise machine

Securely raise the machine off the ground using blocks or heavy-duty jack stands. Ensure the wheels or tracks can turn freely and no weight is applied to them. Do not lower the machine until the entire procedure is finished.

  4. Set throttle

Turn the engine ON. Adjust the engine throttle to 100% (full throttle) and leave it there.

  5. Bias pumps

Move the joystick(s) forward to the end stop (100% forward command) for 30 seconds so both wheels/tracks turn forward, then return the joysticks to neutral. Note: Both pumps must be biased in the same direction for optimal calibration offsets. Do not make any ground drive adjustments after this step.

  6. Perform static calibration

Using the EST, initiate and complete the 'Ground Drive Static Calibration'.

  7. Verify static calibration

The EST will confirm when the static calibration is successful. At this point, fault codes 1215 (Forward Pumps) and 1216 (Reverse Pumps) will appear on the instrument cluster, indicating that the dynamic calibration is now required.

  8. Reset UCM

Do NOT start the dynamic calibration immediately. Turn the machine key OFF and get out of the operator seat for at least 10 seconds to force a UCM reset.

  9. Perform dynamic calibration

Turn the machine back on, sit in the seat, and use the EST to initiate the 'Dynamic Calibration'. Follow the on-screen prompts to drive the pumps to saturation in reverse, which will clear fault code 1216.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Universal Control Module (UCM / ECU)

    47395504

Remanufactured part number: 47395504R or 84529539. Requires flashing/programming with the EST before use.

  • Tandem Drive Pump Solenoid Coil (EH Controls)

    84389760
