12160 - EPL

Case IH 12160 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: Fault On EEPROM EPL

Issue description

The controller has detected an error or corruption within its internal memory (EEPROM). This memory stores critical calibration values, configuration settings, and fault history. When this code is triggered, it indicates that the stored data is either corrupted, missing, or the physical memory chip has failed.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (e.g., Puma 115, 125, 140, 150, 165, 175, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX / CVXDrive / Multicontroller)

Check the cause

  1. Check Voltage: Access the EPL controller's H9 menu (Voltmeter diagnostic) to ensure the controller is receiving proper voltage. Voltage drops or spikes (which trigger related codes like 12052 or 12053) can cause memory corruption.

  2. Check for Accompanying Codes: Access the HB menu (Display stored fault codes) to see if other codes are present. If CAN bus errors or power supply codes are present, resolve those wiring issues first.

  3. Verify Battery Health: Ensure the tractor's battery is fully charged and the terminals are tight, as low voltage during startup or shutdown can interrupt EEPROM writing.

Repair steps

  1. Clear the EEPROM

Enter the EPL controller diagnostic mode. Navigate to the H8 menu ("Clear stored calibration information / EEPROM"). Depress and hold the "m" button on the control panel to confirm the resetting of the EEPROM. This will wipe the corrupted data and reset all values back to default.

  2. Recalibrate the EPL System

Park the tractor on a flat, open surface. Ensure the handbrake is released and the shuttle lever is in the park position. Enter the calibration menu. Ensure the EPL orientation configuration is set correctly (the default is "FRT" for front-located). If this is incorrect, code 12212 (Accelerometer Not Calibrated) will trigger. Use the "h" and "m" buttons to calibrate the applied and released positions of the park lock. Depress and hold the "m" button to calibrate the released position until the display shows "M", then release. Cycle the ignition key off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.

  3. Evaluate

Operate the shuttle lever and park lock. If fault code 12160 returns immediately, the EEPROM chip inside the controller is physically defective and the EPL Controller assembly must be replaced.
