Case IH 12162 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller / ACU (Actuator Control Unit): Fault on EPL Temperature Reading
Issue description
The internal temperature sensor reading for the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator is registering an abnormal value, either falling completely out of its programmed operating range or experiencing erratic voltage spikes.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX, 240 CVX
- Magnum Series 180, 210, 230, 255, 285
- Maxxum Series 100-140
- Steiger
- Optum
Check the cause
Check for accompanying codes (12163 EPL Over Temperature or 12188 Excessive Pad Wear) which indicate mechanical binding or an improperly adjusted EPL cable causing the motor to overheat.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to the EPL actuator for corrosion, moisture, or chafing, which can cause a spike diagnosis.
Use the tractor's onboard H-Menu (menu H9 for voltmeter diagnostics and HB for fault codes) or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor live temperature data from the ACU.
Verify battery voltage and the power supply to the EPL controller, as voltage drops or spikes can cause the ACU sensors to read out of range.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and securely chock the wheels, as you will be disabling the parking brake system.
Access the Actuator
Locate the EPL actuator assembly (usually mounted near the transmission/rear axle housing).
Disconnect and Clean
Disconnect the main wiring harness to the EPL actuator. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Reconnect and re-test.
Replace the Actuator
If the wiring is sound but the 12162 code persists and live data shows erratic temperature spikes, the internal sensor of the ACU has failed. The EPL actuator unit must be removed and replaced (or sent out for remanufacture).
Clear Codes
Once the new actuator is installed, use the EST or the tractor's H-Menu (menu H8) to clear the stored EEPROM calibration information and fault codes.
Recalibrate
Perform the EPL calibration procedure to teach the new actuator its engaged and disengaged end-stop positions.
