12163 - EPL

Case IH 12163 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller (module XA): ACU temperature – power stage over temperature

Issue description

The Actuator Control Unit (ACU) power stage has overheated during the feeding/actuation phase. The actuator is drawing too much current or straining, causing the internal electronics to exceed their safe operating temperature limit.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum Series (180, 190, 210, 225, 240)
  • Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225, 235, 250, 260, 270)
  • Maxxum Series (100-140, Multicontroller models)
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the EPL Cable Adjustment: Ensure the cable is not too tight or out of adjustment, which causes the electric motor to work too hard.

  2. Inspect for Mechanical Binding: Check the physical park lock mechanism and shuttle lever for binding, damage, or excessive brake pad wear.

  3. Check Battery and Voltage: Verify battery health and check the electrical connections to the EPL module, as low voltage can cause higher amperage draw.

  4. Diagnostic Menu Verification: Use the tractor's Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the onboard ADIC 'H' menu (specifically the HB menu) to read live data and confirm if the code is active or stored.

Repair steps

  1. Adjust the Mechanism

Adjust the EPL cable to the correct factory specifications to relieve mechanical strain on the actuator.

  2. Replace the Actuator

If the actuator's internal power stage has permanently failed due to the overheating event, remove and replace the Electronic Park Lock actuator/controller assembly.

  3. Recalibrate the EPL

Enter the H1 menu via the ADIC (selecting the EPL/XA sub-menu). Perform the Stroke Calibration ("SC") using the "h" and "m" buttons, then perform the Inclinometer/Accelerometer Calibration ("Inc").

  4. Clear Faults

Access the H8 menu to clear stored calibration EEPROM data if starting fresh, and use the HB menu to clear the stored 12163 fault code.

  5. Alternative Workaround

If the EPL module is completely failed and replacement is not immediately viable, use the EST configuration tool to digitally disable the Electronic Park Lock. The operator will then be required to manually use the left-hand mechanical parking brake.
