Case IH 12163 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) controller / ACU (Actuator Control Unit) / Module XA: EPL Over Temperature
Issue description
The power stage within the Actuator Control Unit (ACU) that drives the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) has exceeded its safe operating temperature limit. This overheating is often caused by the electric motor overworking due to mechanical binding, low voltage, or a failing internal component.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Puma/Mid Range Magnum
- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma Series (125, 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, 240)
- Magnum Series (180, 200, 220, 225, 240)
- Maxxum Series
- Optum Series
Check the cause
Perform a proper load test on the battery and clean/tighten the battery cables, as low voltage or amperage can cause the EPL actuator to struggle and overheat.
Inspect the wiring harness for the actuator, specifically the switch connector of the electronic parking brake, the parking brake relay, and the actuator cables (connectors X012, X036, X121, and X745) for signs of overheating, corrosion, or disconnection.
Ensure the tractor is building adequate brake booster pressure upon startup, as low pressure can trigger secondary EPL issues.
Try to clear the code and recalibrate the EPL actuator by accessing the tractor's diagnostic H1 menu using the instrument cluster buttons or the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843).
Repair steps
Prepare tractor
Ensure the tractor is safely parked on level ground. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery.
Locate actuator
Locate the Electronic Park Lock actuator/controller assembly (Module XA).
Disconnect wiring
Disconnect the electrical wiring harnesses connected to the ACU.
Disconnect cable
Disconnect the mechanical actuator cable (the 1040mm cable linking the actuator to the park lock mechanism).
Remove actuator
Unbolt and remove the faulty EPL actuator assembly.
Install new actuator
Install the new or remanufactured EPL actuator assembly and secure it to the mounting bracket.
Reconnect components
Reconnect the mechanical cable and plug in the electrical harnesses.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Calibrate actuator
You must calibrate the new EPL actuator. Enter the H1 diagnostic menu. Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the applied and released positions. Note: Use the service brakes during the calibration procedure to prevent the tractor from rolling.
