Case IH 12172 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Actuator - cable disconnection
Issue description
The control module has detected an open circuit, loss of communication, or loss of power to the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator. The underlying condition is typically a disconnected, broken, or corroded wiring harness/cable leading to the actuator, or an internal open circuit within the actuator itself.

Check the cause
Check battery and system voltage, as low voltage can trigger false EPL faults. Ensure the battery is fully charged, load-tested, and battery cables are clean and tight.
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the EPL controller and the actuator. Look for tugged wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs.
Perform specific circuit checks on the switch connector data (X012), the parking electronic brake relay (X036), the parking brake switch connector (X121), and the parking electronic brake connector (X745).
Disconnect the actuator and test for 12V power and ground at the connector. If voltage is present but the actuator does not respond, the actuator has likely failed internally. If voltage is absent, trace the 12V supply back to the controller, checking for blown fuses, faulty relays, or a broken wire in the harness.
Verify that the clutch pedal switch is engaging properly. A loose trigger screw on the clutch pedal can prevent the system from recognizing operator inputs, mimicking an interlock or EPL failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Actuator
Locate the Electronic Park Lock actuator on the transmission housing.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, cut away the damaged section. Strip the insulation and twist the bare leads together (matching wire colors). Solder the connection using resin-cored solder only (do not use other types of solder as it may cause further cable damage), and seal it tightly with heat shrink or vinyl insulation tape.
Actuator Replacement (If Applicable)
If the actuator is internally faulty, unbolt the defective unit from its mounting bracket and install the replacement actuator. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassemble and Power Up
Reconnect the battery and turn the key switch on.
EPL Calibration
After repairing the cable or replacing the actuator, the system must be calibrated. Install the diagnostic test switch (Special Tool #380000843) into the diagnostic socket located in the cab (usually on the right-hand rear pillar). Use the instrument cluster buttons to navigate to the 'H' menu, specifically the H1 menu screen for the EPL (XA) controller. Follow the on-screen prompts to initialize the actuator. Ensure the shuttle lever is in the park position. Use the service brakes to prevent the tractor from moving during the dynamic calibration steps.
