12181 - EPL

Case IH 12181 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) Controller: Actuator - Actuation timeout, dynamic misuse

Issue description

The EPL actuator failed to reach its commanded position (applied or released) within the expected time limit, or the system detected a 'dynamic misuse' (such as the operator attempting to engage the park lock while the tractor is still in motion, or a mechanical binding preventing the actuator from moving).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma 140
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 185
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 225
  • Puma 240
  • Magnum 225
  • Magnum 255
  • Magnum 285
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and load test the battery; clean and tighten cables, as low voltage or amperage can cause the actuator to move too slowly and trigger a timeout.

  2. Verify the clutch pedal switch is engaging properly by listening for a physical click when depressed. Check if the adjustment screw has backed out, preventing the switch from triggering.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connections leading to the EPL actuator for tugged, damaged, or corroded wires.

  4. Check for mechanical binding inside the transmission to ensure the park lock mechanism is not physically jammed.

Repair steps

  1. Park tractor

Park the tractor on a flat, open surface.

  2. Prepare tractor for calibration

Ensure the handbrake is released and the shuttle lever is in the park position.

  3. Insert diagnostic test switch

Insert the diagnostic test switch (Special Tool 380000843) into the diagnostic connector located in the cab on the right-hand side rear pillar behind the operator's seat.

  4. Access diagnostic menu

Access the 'H' menu mode on the instrument cluster.

  5. Select EPL sub-system

Select the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) sub-system by depressing the 'dimming' button.

  6. Navigate to calibration

Use the 'h' and 'm' buttons to navigate to the calibration channel.

  7. Calibrate EPL

Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the EPL applied position, released position, and the accelerometer.

  8. Replace EPL actuator

If the calibration fails, or if the actuator motor is burnt out, physically replace the EPL actuator.

  9. Recalibrate new actuator

After installing a new actuator, repeat the calibration procedure.

Parts you might need
