12183 - EPL

Case IH 12183 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller: Actuator moving without command

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator is detected as moving or changing position when the controller has not issued a command for it to do so. This is typically caused by an electrical short, a faulty parking brake relay, a damaged wiring harness, or an internal failure within the actuator itself.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma 140
  • Case IH Puma 165
  • Case IH Puma 180
  • Case IH Puma 185
  • Case IH Puma 195
  • Case IH Puma 210
  • Case IH Puma 225
  • Case IH Puma 240
  • Case IH Magnum 200
  • Case IH Magnum 225
  • Case IH Magnum MX210
  • Case IH Magnum MX230
  • Case IH Magnum MX255
  • Case IH Magnum MX285

Check the cause

  1. Inspect Connectors and Relays: Check the Shuttle/Reverser switch connector (X012), Electronic parking brake relay (X036), Parking brake switch connector (X121), and Electronic parking brake actuator connector (X745) for shorts to ground, shorts to voltage, or open circuits.

  2. Check the Clutch Pedal Switch: A misadjusted or loose clutch pedal switch can sometimes interfere with the starting circuit and EPL operation. Ensure the switch clicks and engages properly when the pedal is depressed.

  3. Battery and Voltage Test: The EPL system is highly sensitive to low voltage. Load test the battery and clean the battery cables, as low amperage can cause the EPL to behave erratically.

Repair steps

  1. Resolve Wiring Faults

If any corrosion, damaged pins, or broken wires are found at connectors X012, X036, X121, or X745, repair the harness or replace the electronic parking brake relay.

  2. Replace the Actuator

If the wiring and relays test good, the internal position sensor or motor of the EPL actuator has likely failed. Replace the Electronic Control Actuator.

  3. Enter Diagnostic Mode

After replacing the part, you must recalibrate the system. Gain access to the diagnostic "H" menu (this may require inserting the special diagnostic test switch tool, part number 380000843, into the tractor's diagnostic connector located behind the operator's seat).

  4. Clear Old Data

Navigate to the EPL (XA) sub-menu. Go to the H8 menu to clear the stored calibration information (EEPROM).

  5. Perform Calibration

Enter the H1 menu. The display will show "CAL". Use the "h" and "m" buttons to select "SC" (Stroke Calibration) to calibrate the new actuator's travel limits. You may also need to perform the "Inc" (Accelerometer/Inclinometer) calibration.

  6. Verify Repair

Cycle the key, engage and disengage the park lock, and check the HB menu to ensure fault code 12183 does not return.
