12188 - EPL

Case IH 12188 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) Controller: Actuator - Excessive Pad Wear (EPL)

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator has reached or exceeded its maximum travel limit when attempting to engage the parking brake, typically caused by severe physical wear of the parking brake pads or an improperly adjusted EPL Bowden cable.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series (180, 190, 210, 215, 225, 235, 245, 255, 275, 285, 305, 335)
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX)
  • Case IH Vestrum CVX

Check the cause

  1. Cable Adjustment Check: Inspect the mechanical adjustment of the EPL transmission lever and Bowden cable to ensure it is not stretched or improperly adjusted.

  2. Actuator Initialization & Calibration: Attempt to recalibrate the EPL applied and released positions using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard 'H1' calibration menu.

  3. Mechanical Binding Check: Check if the brake rotor/pads on the input shaft are sticking, which can cause the brake pads to drag and burn up prematurely.

Repair steps

  1. Adjust the EPL Cable

Adjust the EPL Bowden cable to factory specifications. Clear the codes using the 'H8' menu (Clear stored calibration/error codes) and attempt to recalibrate. If the code returns, the pads are worn beyond the adjustment limit.

  2. Split the Tractor

To access the parking brake assembly (located on the transmission input shaft), the tractor must be split. Ensure the machine is securely blocked and supported on a level surface before splitting.

  3. Replace Brake Components

Remove the worn parking brake pads and inspect the brake rotor for heat damage, scoring, or sticking. Replace the brake pads (and rotor if damaged).

  4. Reassemble and Reconnect

Rejoin the tractor halves and reconnect the EPL actuator and Bowden cable.

  5. Perform EPL Calibration

You must perform a full EPL calibration procedure. Using the EST or the H1 menu, calibrate the 'EPL applied' position, the 'EPL released' position, and the accelerometer.

  6. Clear Fault Codes

Access the H8 menu on the controller to erase all stored EEPROM error codes and verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Park Brake Pad Kit
