12189 - EPL

Case IH 12189 - EPL – Electronic Park Lock (EPL) Controller / Universal Controller: Actuator - EPL misuse

Issue description

The Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator has detected a "misuse" condition. This typically occurs when the operator attempts to engage the park lock while the tractor is still moving at a speed that exceeds the safe engagement threshold. It can also be triggered by a calibration error, an incongruence between the handbrake/shuttle park switches, or if the actuator's internal motor/encoder is stressed due to improper operation.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series (e.g., 140, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, 240 CVX)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)

Check the cause

  1. Check system voltage: Ensure the battery is fully charged and load-tested, as low voltage or a failing alternator can cause the EPL controller to malfunction.

  2. Check switch incongruence: Verify that the shuttle park switch and the handbrake switch are functioning correctly (look for related codes 12192 or 12202).

  3. Inspect the clutch switch: Ensure the clutch pedal switch is properly adjusted and clicking when depressed, as a loose switch can interrupt the engagement sequence.

  4. Check for actuator initialization: Look for code 12213, which indicates the system lost its calibration memory and needs to be relearned.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic test switch

Connect the diagnostic test switch (Special Tool #380000843) to the main diagnostic connector, which is located in the cab on the right-hand side rear pillar behind the operator's seat.

  2. Turn key ON

Turn the key start switch to the ON position.

  3. Navigate to H1 menu

The dot matrix display will show "HH MENU". Use the menu buttons to navigate to the H1 menu (Electronic park lock controller - Calibration procedures).

  4. Calibrate actuator positions

Follow the on-screen prompts to calibrate the applied and released positions of the actuator. You will need to hold the "m" button to calibrate the released position.

  5. Complete calibration

Continue following the prompts until the display shows the "EPL applied" symbol.

  6. Clear error codes

Navigate to the HC menu (or perform an H8 operation) to clear all stored EEPROM error codes.

  7. Cycle key and test

Cycle the key. If the code returns immediately or the actuator makes grinding/straining noises, the internal motor or encoder is burnt out from the misuse event, and the actuator assembly must be replaced.
