Case IH 12189 – Universal Controller, Cluster, or Electronic Park Lock (EPL) controller: Actuator - EPL misuse

The Electronic Park Lock (EPL) actuator has detected an unexpected state, movement without command, or an invalid status. This is often triggered by operator misuse (such as attempting to engage the park lock while the tractor is still moving at an invalid speed), a loss of actuator calibration, or a mechanical/electrical failure within the actuator itself.

   Verify operator operation to ensure the park lock is not being engaged improperly while the tractor is moving.

   Inspect the shuttle park switch and handbrake switch for proper operation and incongruence, which can trigger related EPL faults.

   Plug the diagnostic test switch (special tool 380000843) into the diagnostic connector (typically on the right-hand side rear pillar behind the seat) to access the 'H' diagnostic menu.

   Navigate to the H2 menu (Electronic park lock controller - View stored calibration values) to check if the actuator has lost its calibration.

   Attempt Recalibration

   Navigate to the H1 menu (Electronic park lock controller - Calibration procedures).

   Calibrate Positions

   Select the electronic park lock sub-system by depressing the 'dimming' button. Use the 'h' and 'm' buttons to calibrate the applied and released positions. Hold the 'm' button to calibrate the released position until the display shows 'M', then release it. Follow the prompts until the 'EPL applied' symbol is displayed.

   Clear Codes

   Once calibrated, navigate to the HC menu to erase all stored error codes without erasing your new calibration information. (Note: Do not use the H8 menu unless you intend to clear all EEPROM values back to factory default).

   Replace Actuator (If Calibration Fails)

   If the actuator fails to calibrate, times out (code 12185), or the 12189 code immediately returns, the actuator is mechanically bound or electrically failed.

   Installation

   Disconnect the battery, locate the EPL actuator on the transmission housing, disconnect the electrical harness, and unbolt the unit. Install the replacement actuator and repeat the H1 calibration procedure.
