Case IH 12202 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock): Fault On Handbrake Switch Line

Issue description

Indicates a mismatch between the physical state of the handbrake switch (hardwired to the controller) and the CAN bus data message (VCU_HB_SWITCH parameter in the VCU2EPL message). The controller is seeing conflicting information about whether the parking brake is engaged or released, commonly caused by a dead battery, a cut wire, or a short circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • Puma/Mid Range Magnum
  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Puma series (Puma 115 through 225, including CVX models)
  • Magnum series (Magnum 190)
  • Maxxum
  • MXM
  • MXU

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage history to see if the tractor's batteries recently went dead, were disconnected, or were replaced (causes EPL to lose calibration)

  2. Inspect the connector at the handbrake switch, specifically looking for a cut or broken blue wire

  3. Check pins A4 and C7 at the EPL module for a short circuit to ground or a short to the power supply voltage

  4. Verify that the shuttle/reverse lever is properly seated in the parking position

Repair steps

  1. Reinitialize EPL

Sit in the operator's seat and firmly depress and hold both foot brake pedals.

  2. Reinitialize EPL

    Release the handbrake.

  3. Reinitialize EPL

Turn the ignition key to the 'RUN' position.

  4. Reinitialize EPL

Place the shift lever into the Neutral position.

  5. Reinitialize EPL

Press and hold the Neutral button on the shifter handle. The electronic parking brake should release, and the system will reinitialize, clearing the code.

  6. Test switch continuity

If the reinitialization does not work, use a multimeter to test the continuity of the handbrake switch contacts (N.C. contact).

  7. Replace switch

If the switch fails to open/close properly, remove the console trim surrounding the handbrake lever to access the switch. Disconnect the electrical harness, unbolt the faulty switch, and install the replacement.

  8. Repair wiring

If the switch tests fine, repair the open/shorted wire (often the blue wire) between the switch and the EPL module pins A4/C7.
