12215 - EPL

Case IH 12215 - EPL – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) controller or Universal Controller: Factory – trailer relay present but not configured

Issue description

Configuration mismatch: the control module is electrically detecting the physical presence of a trailer brake relay in the circuit, but the tractor's software configuration (factory settings) is programmed to indicate that the trailer brake relay is not installed.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma series
  • Magnum series
  • Steiger series
  • Maxxum series
  • Optum series
  • Farmall series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuse/relay panel to determine if a trailer brake relay is physically plugged into the socket

  2. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the onboard diagnostic display to view the current configuration status of the trailer brake relay in the EPL or Universal Controller

  3. If the tractor is not supposed to have a trailer brake relay and the socket is empty, inspect the relay socket and associated wiring harness for a short circuit to voltage or ground

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port, or access the onboard diagnostic configuration menu via the instrument cluster.

  2. Navigate to settings

Navigate to the EPL (Electronic Park Lock) or Universal Controller configuration settings.

  3. Resolve mismatch

Resolve the hardware/software mismatch: If the tractor is equipped with a trailer brake system, update the software configuration to set the trailer brake relay to 'Present' or 'Configured'. If the tractor is NOT equipped with a trailer brake system, physically remove the incorrectly installed relay from the panel. If no relay is present, repair the shorted wiring in the relay circuit.

  4. Clear fault codes

Clear the stored fault codes. For the EPL controller, you can access the diagnostic menu to clear codes (e.g., using the 'HC' menu to erase stored error codes, or the 'H8' menu to clear stored calibration/EEPROM information if a full reset is required).

  5. Verify repair

Cycle the ignition key (turn off, wait, turn back on) and verify that fault code 12215 does not return.
