Case IH 12218 – XCM: Error Configuration (Shuttle Park Switch or/and REC_STATUS or/and Hand brake switch present, but not configured).
Issue description
The control module is receiving an electrical signal indicating that a Shuttle Park Switch, REC_STATUS, or Handbrake switch is physically installed on the machine, but the tractor's software configuration is currently set to "NO" (not present) for that component. It is a mismatch between the physical hardware detected and the software parameters.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Maxxum
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Optum
- Case IH Magnum
Check the cause
Inspect the tractor's cab and transmission controls to verify if a Shuttle Park Switch or electronic Handbrake switch is physically equipped on the machine.
Access the H3 Configuration Menu via the instrument cluster or Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if the Handbrake or Shuttle Park Switch parameter is incorrectly set to 'NO'.
If the tractor does NOT have these switches, inspect the wiring harness (specifically pins A4 or C7 of the EPL module) for a short circuit to ground or a cut wire that could send a false signal.
Check if the XCM controller was recently replaced, as the automatic detection procedure may simply need its configuration finalized.
Repair steps
Configure software
If the switch is physically present: Enter the H3 Menu using the diagnostic lead or instrument cluster keypad. Locate the configuration channel for the Handbrake / Shuttle Park Switch. Change the parameter from "NO" to "YES" so the software matches the hardware. Save the configuration (the instrument cluster will beep to indicate the selection has been stored).
Repair wiring
If the switch is NOT physically present: Trace the wiring harness for the Handbrake/Shuttle Park switch circuit. Repair any shorts to ground or chafed wires that are sending a false "switch present" voltage to the XCM.
Clear fault code
Navigate to the HC Menu to erase all stored error codes. Important Note: Do NOT use the H8 menu for this specific repair unless you intend to wipe all EEPROM settings, as H8 clears all calibration values back to default. The H3 menu must be used for configuration changes, and HC for clearing the code.
Verify repair
Cycle the key (Key OFF, wait 10 seconds, Key ON) and verify that fault code 12218 does not return.
