1222

Case IH 1222 – VCM / UCM: VCM Sustained Over Temperature Limit

Issue description

The internal temperature sensor inside the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) has detected that the module's internal temperature has exceeded the maximum safe operating limit for a sustained period.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • SR130
  • SR150
  • SR175
  • SR200
  • SR220
  • SR250
  • SV185
  • SV250
  • SV300
  • TR270
  • TR320
  • TV380

Check the cause

  1. Recreate the error and verify fault code 1222 is active using the Electronic Service Tool (EST)

  2. Visually inspect harnesses and connectors attached to the VCM/UCM for physical damage, bent or dislocated pins, corroded terminals, or broken wires

  3. Verify that all connectors are fully seated and installed correctly into the module

  4. Flex the involved wiring harnesses while operating the machine and monitoring the EST/Display to reveal any intermittent breaks or shorts causing high current draw

  5. Check nearby wiring and ensure the module is not being subjected to an external heat source

Repair steps

  1. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

If damage, corrosion, or a short is found during the diagnostic inspection, repair the damaged harness or connector. Clear the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) using the EST and operate the machine to verify if the error has been resolved.

  2. Module Replacement (If wiring is intact)

If no wiring damage is found and the fault code persists, the VCM/UCM has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  3. Access the Module

Disconnect the battery (negative terminal first). Locate the VCM/UCM (on skid steers, this typically requires tilting the cab to access the chassis electronics).

  4. Remove the Module

Disconnect the wiring harnesses from the module and unbolt it from its mounting bracket.

  5. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement VCM/UCM and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  6. Programming

Use the Case Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the module and configure the machine settings (e.g., selecting Electro-hydraulic controls, door status, specific model, and region).
