Case IH 1223 – VCM (Vehicle Control Module): VCM Sustained Over Current Limit

Issue description

The Vehicle Control Module is detecting a continuous electrical current draw that exceeds its maximum safe operating threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to ground in one of the output circuits controlled by the module, a failed actuator/sensor drawing too much amperage, or an internal short within the module itself.

Applies to these machines

  • skid steer
  • SSL (Skid Steer Loader)
  • CTL (Compact Track Loader)
  • Case IH Farmall tractors
  • SR270
  • TR310
  • TV450
  • Farmall 90C
  • Farmall 100C
  • Farmall 110C
  • Farmall 120U

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the main wiring harnesses connected to the VCM for signs of chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could be shorting directly to the machine's chassis (ground).

  2. Isolate output circuits by disconnecting output connectors one by one. Monitor the diagnostic display to see if the 1223 fault changes from 'Active' to 'Stored/Inactive' to locate the shorted circuit.

  3. If all external harnesses and actuators test within specification and show no shorts to ground, test the VCM for an internal hardware failure.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn the timed disconnect switch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery isolator before servicing the VCM to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Repair Wiring

If a shorted wire or failed actuator was found during diagnosis, repair the wiring harness or replace the faulty component.

  3. Replace the VCM

If internally failed: Unplug the multi-pin connectors from the VCM, unbolt the module from its mounting bracket, install the new VCM and reconnect the harnesses.

  4. Calibration

If the VCM/ECU is replaced, you must use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to reload the machine's dataset and restore self-learning parameters/calibrations (such as ground drive and loader valve calibrations).

Parts you might need
