124

Case IH 124 – TMF or AUX: Aux 1st Lower solenoid failed open or short circuit.

Issue description

The controller has detected an electrical fault in the circuit that operates the "Lower" (or retract) solenoid on the 1st Auxiliary (remote) hydraulic valve. The system is seeing either an open circuit (such as a broken wire, disconnected plug, or burnt-out internal coil) or a short circuit (wiring shorted to ground or another wire).

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • MX Magnum Series
  • TG Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the electrical connector on the 'Lower' solenoid at the 1st auxiliary remote valve stack for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins.

  2. Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the pins of the solenoid coil (infinite indicates an open coil, near zero indicates a shorted coil).

  3. Check the wiring harness between the TMF controller and the solenoid plug for continuity, broken wires, and shorts to ground or power.

  4. Perform a swap test by swapping the 1st Aux 'Lower' solenoid coil with the 1st Aux 'Raise' solenoid coil. If the code changes to TMF 126, the coil is failed; if it remains 124, the issue is in the wiring or controller.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Component

Access the auxiliary remote valve stack at the rear of the machine and identify the 1st valve slice. Locate the specific solenoid responsible for the "Lower" function.

  3. Remove the Coil

Disconnect the electrical harness plug from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or cap at the end of the valve stem.

  4. Replace

Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge stem. Slide the new OEM replacement coil onto the stem.

  5. Reassemble

Reinstall and tighten the retaining nut (do not overtighten, as this can damage the coil housing). Reconnect the electrical harness plug securely.

  6. Clear and Test

Reconnect the battery. Turn on the tractor, clear the archived fault codes via the cab display or diagnostic tool, and actuate the 1st remote valve to ensure the code does not return and the hydraulics function properly.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Auxiliary Remote Valve Solenoid Coil (or EHR Valve Solenoid)

Exact part depends heavily on the specific tractor model, year, and whether the valve stack was manufactured by Bosch Rexroth, Husco, or another OEM.
