Case IH 124 – TRANS: Creeper clutch solenoid coil or its wiring shorted to power

The controller has detected an unexpected +12V voltage on the circuit for the creeper clutch solenoid, which typically occurs when the solenoid coil fails internally (short circuit) or the wiring harness has rubbed through and is touching a live power source.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the creeper clutch solenoid for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas rubbing against the chassis or a +12V power wire.

   Perform a solenoid coil resistance test: disconnect the creeper clutch solenoid connector and measure resistance across the pins. Near zero resistance indicates an internal short.

   Perform a harness voltage test: with the solenoid disconnected and the key ON, check the signal wire for voltage. If +12V is present, the short to power is in the wiring harness.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.

   Locate the Solenoid

   Locate the creeper clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block (refer to the transmission section of the service manual for the exact port location).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the creeper clutch solenoid.

   Address Wiring (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic tests proved the harness was shorted to power, trace the wire back to the TRANS controller. Repair the exposed/shorted section of the wire using heat-shrink tubing and electrical tape, or replace that section of the harness.

   Replace Solenoid (If Applicable)

   If the solenoid coil tested as internally shorted: Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve block. Remove the retaining nut/hardware holding the solenoid coil in place. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem (or remove the entire cartridge valve if it is a one-piece unit). Install the new creeper clutch solenoid and tighten the retaining hardware to the specified torque.

   Reassembly & Testing

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key ON, clear the fault codes from the transmission controller, and test the operation of the creeper gears to ensure the code does not return and the clutch engages properly.
