Case IH 125 – ATC: High pressure switch (+) input shorted to power

Issue description

The control module has detected that the positive (+) signal circuit for the Air Conditioning (A/C) High-Pressure Switch is receiving unexpected voltage, indicating a short circuit to a 12V power source.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Harness: Visually inspect the wire harness and connector leading to the A/C high-pressure switch. Look for rubbed, chafed, or melted wire insulation that could cause the positive wire to touch a 12V power source.

  2. Test for Voltage: Disconnect the harness lead from the high-pressure switch. Using a multimeter, probe the positive (+) input terminal on the harness side. If it reads 12V when the circuit should be unpowered or grounded, the short is in the wiring harness.

  3. Test the Switch: If the wiring harness tests fine, the internal contacts of the high-pressure switch itself may have failed and shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the A/C high-pressure switch.

    Depending on the tractor model, it is typically located on the high-pressure A/C line near the compressor or condenser.

  2. Disconnect the harness lead.

    Disconnect the harness lead to the air conditioner high-pressure switch.

  3. Gain access to the switch (if restricted).

    If access is restricted by the compressor, as noted in some Steiger/Quadtrac manuals: Use a breaker bar to relieve the tension on the serpentine belt and remove the belt from the A/C compressor pulley. Support the compressor and remove the mounting bolts to gain access.

  4. Unthread the faulty high-pressure switch.

    Note: Many modern Case IH A/C pressure switches are mounted on a Schrader valve, meaning you can unscrew the switch without discharging the A/C system. Verify this on your specific model before removal to avoid venting refrigerant.

  5. Install the new high-pressure switch.

    Thread the new high-pressure switch onto the fitting and tighten to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Reinstall components.

    Reinstall the compressor and serpentine belt (if removed).

  8. Clear fault codes and test.

    Clear the ATC fault codes from the cab monitor and test the A/C system to ensure the compressor clutch engages properly.
