Case IH 12503 – Vehicle Control Module (TECU / Chassis Controller): Air pressure sensor circuit 2 (rear axle) - open circuit or short to ground
Issue description
The control module is detecting an abnormal electrical condition on the signal wire for the secondary air pressure circuit (Circuit 2), which monitors the pneumatic pressure for the rear axle brakes or air suspension. The controller is seeing either zero voltage (a broken/disconnected wire) or the signal wire is touching a ground source (chassis or ground wire).

Check the cause
Locate the Air Pressure Sensor for Circuit 2 (usually mounted on the pneumatic valve block near the rear axle or air tanks) and inspect the sensor connector (X980) for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Trace the wiring harness back from the sensor and look for areas where the wire might be rubbing against the chassis, rear axle housing, or moving suspension components, causing the insulation to chafe and short to ground.
Disconnect the sensor, turn the key to the ON position, and use a multimeter to check the connector for a 5V reference signal and a good ground.
With the sensor disconnected, check if the active fault code changes from 'short to ground' to 'short to power/high voltage' (Code 12505). If the code changes when unplugged, the wiring is likely fine, and the sensor itself has an internal short to ground.
Repair steps
Depressurize the System
Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and chock the wheels. Turn off the engine. Pump the brake pedals or use the air tank drain lanyards to safely deplete the pneumatic system pressure so the sensor can be removed safely.
Disconnect Electrical Harness
Unplug the wiring harness from the faulty Circuit 2 air pressure sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Using an appropriately sized wrench, carefully unthread the sensor from the air valve block or air line.
Install the New Sensor
Apply a pneumatic-safe thread sealant to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come with pre-applied sealant). Thread it into the port and tighten to OEM specifications (do not over-tighten, as this can crack the brass fittings).
Reconnect and Test
Plug the electrical connector back in. Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure.
Leak Check
Spray soapy water around the base of the new sensor to ensure there are no air leaks.
Clear Codes
Use the tractor's AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 12503 fault code.
