Case IH 12511 – APM (Air Processing Module): Circuit 2 air pressure greater than Circuit 1 air pressure

Issue description

A pressure imbalance within the pneumatic air brake system where the secondary air circuit (Circuit 2) is registering a higher pressure than the primary air circuit (Circuit 1), which typically points to a leak, a blockage, or a sensor reading error in the air supply system.

Check the cause

  1. Connect a diagnostic service tool to verify if code 12511 is active and monitor live data for both Circuit 1 and Circuit 2 air pressure sensors.

  2. Perform a manual pressure test using mechanical gauges on the test ports for Circuit 1 and Circuit 2 to verify if the actual physical pressure matches the sensor data.

  3. If mechanical gauges show equal pressure (electrical fault cause): check for a faulty pressure sensor or wiring harness issue.

  4. If mechanical gauges confirm Circuit 2 pressure is greater than Circuit 1 (pneumatic fault cause): inspect the pneumatic system for air leaks on the Circuit 1 lines and check the Air Processing Module (APM) valves for sticking or internal bypassing.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the system

    Safely drain all air from the tractor's air reservoirs before loosening any fittings or sensors.

  2. Address Electrical Faults (if applicable)

    If the manual gauge test proved the sensors were reading incorrectly, locate the Circuit 1 and Circuit 2 air pressure sensors on the APM. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, moisture, or chafing. Replace the faulty pressure sensor if the wiring is intact.

  3. Address Pneumatic Faults (if applicable)

    If Circuit 1 is physically losing pressure, trace the Circuit 1 air lines from the APM to the reservoirs and trailer brake couplers. Repair or replace any leaking air lines or fittings.

  4. Service the APM

    If no external leaks are found, the internal regulator or valves within the Air Processing Module may be failing to distribute air evenly. Replace the APM assembly or its internal cartridges/valves as required.

  5. Reassemble and Test

    Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build pressure. Verify that both circuits build pressure evenly and that fault code 12511 clears from the display.
