Case IH 12516 – ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) Module: eXBR1 sequence number not plausible
Issue description
A CAN bus communication error where the sequence number of incoming CAN messages from the eXBR1 module is out of order, missing, or mathematically invalid, indicating a communication breakdown or a software glitch.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying eXBR1 CAN fault codes (e.g., 12702 through 12709) which indicate wiring issues or a dead module
Perform a CAN bus network test by measuring CAN High and CAN Low resistance at the eXBR1 connector (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Inspect the wiring harness between the ABS/EBM module and the eXBR1 valve for chafing, pinched wires, or water ingress at the connectors
Check if there is a software update available for the ABS/UCM module via the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to fix desynchronization
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes during harness manipulation.
Locate the Modules
Locate the eXBR1 valve (typically mounted near the rear remote valves or trailer brake couplings) and the ABS/EBM control unit.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
Disconnect the harness at the eXBR1 valve. Inspect the pins for corrosion or pushed-back terminals. Clean the contacts with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Reconnect securely.
Continuity Testing
If the connectors are clean, disconnect both ends of the harness (at the eXBR1 and the ABS module) and perform a continuity test on the CAN lines. Repair any open circuits or shorts to ground/power.
Software Flash / Calibration
Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic laptop. Clear the inactive fault codes. If the wiring is sound but code 12516 immediately returns as 'Active', reflash the ABS/UCM module with the latest firmware to resolve sequence counting bugs.
Module Replacement
If software updates and wiring repairs fail to clear the code, the eXBR1 module's internal CAN transceiver has likely failed and the valve assembly must be replaced.
