Case IH 12544 – Chassis Control Module (CCM) or Transmission Control Unit (TECU): Air Brake Pressure Sensor – Short to Battery

The control module is receiving a voltage reading from the air brake pressure sensor circuit that is at or near full battery voltage (Vbat/Vcc). This typically happens when the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to a 12V power source, the wiring harness is damaged, or the sensor has suffered an internal electrical failure that bridges the power and signal circuits.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the air brake pressure sensor for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause the signal wire to short against a 12V power wire.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the plug for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that might be bridging the 5V/12V reference directly to the signal return pin.

   With the sensor unplugged and the key in the ON position, use a multimeter to probe the signal wire on the harness side. If it reads battery voltage, the short is in the wiring harness. If it reads 0V (or a standard low reference voltage), the wiring is likely fine, and the sensor itself has failed internally.

   Depressurize the System

   Turn off the tractor engine. Safely bleed all compressed air from the pneumatic brake reservoirs to prevent injury when removing the sensor.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal to protect the CCM/ECU from voltage spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the air brake pressure sensor, which is typically threaded into the pneumatic trailer brake valve block or directly on the air tank.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unplug the electrical connector. Use a wrench to carefully unthread the faulty sensor (the fitting is an M12 x 1.5 thread).

   Install the New Sensor

   Thread the replacement sensor into the port. Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, as this can damage the pneumatic block).

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness and the negative battery terminal.

   Verification

   Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure. Check the sensor fitting for air leaks using soapy water.

   Clear Codes

   Access the tractor's diagnostic menu (or use an electronic service tool) to clear the stored 12544 fault code from the CCM.
