Case IH 12548 – MTA CCM: Pneumatic trailer park brake solenoid short to GND or open circuit
Issue description
The electrical circuit responsible for actuating the pneumatic trailer parking brake has failed. The system is detecting either an open circuit (such as a broken wire, blown fuse, or disconnected plug) or a short to GND (where the power or control wire has chafed and is touching the tractor's metal chassis).

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the pneumatic trailer brake valve block (often located near the transmission housing or rear remotes) for pinched wires, chafed insulation, or disconnected plugs.
Disconnect the harness at the trailer brake solenoid and check for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-back pins inside the connector.
Using a multimeter, test the specific circuits (e.g., on Puma models: +12V circuit A1 825 (Y), trailer park brake solenoid B5 8070 (L), and earth/ground B1 57SZ (B)). Test for continuity between the CCM and the solenoid to rule out a broken wire.
Test for continuity between the control wire and the chassis ground to check for a short.
Measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid itself. Infinite resistance indicates an internal open, while zero or near-zero resistance indicates an internal short.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the tractor parking brake, chock the wheels, and turn off the ignition. Disconnect the battery.
Depressurize the System
Safely bleed all compressed air from the tractor's pneumatic braking system before working on any pneumatic valves to prevent injury.
Access the Valve
Locate the pneumatic trailer brake control valve assembly at the rear of the tractor.
Wiring Repair
If the multimeter tests revealed a broken or shorted wire in the harness, cut out the damaged section, solder in a replacement wire, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink tubing.
Solenoid Replacement
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty pneumatic trailer park brake solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or fasteners securing the solenoid coil to the pneumatic valve body. Slide the old solenoid off the valve stem. Install the new solenoid coil and secure it with the retaining hardware. Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassembly and Testing
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and allow the air compressor to build system pressure. Clear the inactive fault codes from the CCM. Actuate the trailer park brake to ensure proper operation and verify that code 12548 does not return.
