Case IH 12549 – MTA CCM: Pneumatic trailer park brake solenoid short to Vbat

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the pneumatic trailer parking brake solenoid is shorted to battery voltage (Vbat), which prevents the module from properly controlling the solenoid.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall series (40-45-50 Tractors with Cab and CVT Transmission)
  • Puma series (Puma 150, Puma CVX 185)
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Turn the ignition off and locate the pneumatic trailer park brake solenoid valve assembly.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the solenoid.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the CCM and the solenoid for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause the control wire to touch a constant power source (battery voltage).

  4. Use a multimeter to test the harness for a short to power. With the solenoid disconnected, check if battery voltage is present on the control circuit when it shouldn't be.

  5. Test the solenoid coil itself for an internal short circuit.

  6. Check the CCM connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins that could bridge the solenoid circuit to a power pin.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Safely relieve all air pressure from the tractor's pneumatic trailer brake system.

  3. Locate the pneumatic trailer brake valve block (typically mounted near the rear axle/trailer connections).

  4. Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the faulty park brake solenoid.

  5. If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring harness issue, repair the shorted section of the wire or replace the affected harness section.

  6. If the solenoid itself is internally shorted, unbolt the solenoid coil/valve assembly from the pneumatic block.

  7. Install the replacement pneumatic trailer park brake solenoid and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  8. Reconnect the electrical connector to the new solenoid.

  9. Reconnect the battery and start the tractor to build up pneumatic pressure.

  10. Clear the 12549 fault code from the CCM using a diagnostic tool and test the trailer park brake engagement and release to verify the repair.
