Case IH 12553 – MTA CCM & APH: 12kph brake solenoid short to GND or open circuit

The control module has detected an electrical fault in the circuit responsible for operating the 12kph brake solenoid. The circuit is either broken (open circuit) or the wiring/component has shorted directly to ground, which prevents the solenoid from functioning and can cause braking system anomalies.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission/brake valve block for visible damage, rubbing, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.

   Disconnect the 12kph brake solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out pins.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the brake solenoid coil. A reading of zero (or near zero) ohms indicates an internal short, while an infinite reading (OL) indicates an open circuit inside the coil.

   Test the continuity of the wiring from the solenoid connector back to the CCM/APH module to rule out a broken wire in the harness.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Solenoid

   Locate the 12kph brake solenoid on the transmission or axle hydraulic valve block.

   Component Replacement

   If the solenoid coil failed the resistance test, remove the retaining nut/clip, slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem, and install the new OEM solenoid. (In some cases, the entire solenoid valve cartridge may need to be unthreaded and replaced).

   Wiring Repair

   If the solenoid tested good, locate the break or short in the wiring harness. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the affected harness section.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the solenoid harness and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Use a dealer-level diagnostic tool (such as the Jaltest Agricultural kit or CNH EST) to clear the inactive 12553 fault code from the CCM.

   Test Operation

   Start the tractor and test the braking system to ensure the code does not return and the brakes engage/disengage properly.
